What is an LED?
Before the Disadvantages and Advantages of led. We need to know about LED.LED stands for Light-Emitting Diode(LED). LED is a semiconductor device. It emits visible light when an electric current passes through it. In most of the LEDs, the light is monochromatic and occurs at a single wavelength. we cannot say that light is particularly bright.
LEDs can be the assessment of other colors because they have become very famous/popular with case lightning. But commonly LEDs are amber, green, or red. Some of the LEDs emit infrared energy. The LEDs which emit infrared (IR), are known as Infrared-emitting-diode(IRED).
An LED or IRED consists of two elements. These elements are made of processed material which is called:
P-type and N-type have placed n a contact (direct contact). They form a region which is called P-N Junction. Due to this characteristic, the LED or ILED is similar to most of the other types of the diode. But they still have many differences which are very important.
The LED/ IRED has a large PN-Junction area. The shape of PN-Junction is tailored to the application.
The LED/ IRED has a transparent package. This package allows the visible or infrared(IR) energy to pass through.
Working of LED:
The LED works according to the quantum theory. According to the quantum theory when the energy of electrons decreases from the highest level to the lowest level, the energy is emitted in the form of photons. The energy of the photons is equal to the gap between the highest level and the lowest level.
The LEDs are connected in the forward biased, due to this current flows in the forward direction. The movement of electrons in the opposite direction is the reason for the flow of current. Due to the recombination, the electrons move from the conduction band to the valence band and they emit electromagnetic energy in the form of photons. The energy of photons is equal to the gap between the conduction band and the valence band.

- LEDs are low cost.
- LEDs are low power devices.
- LEDs use low voltage.
- LEDs provide sunlight color output.
- The off and on time of LED is less than 1 nanosecond.
- LEDs are very economical.
- LEDs have high efficiency.
Disadvantages of LED:
- The LED consumes more power.
- The cost of LEDs is very high.
- LEDs are not used for making the large display.
- Over-driving an LED may result in overheating.
- The overheating of an LED may result in device failure.
