Bus Topology

What is Bus Topology? Advantages and disadvantages of topology.

Bus topology definition:

This is a type of network in which every computer and the network device are connected with a single cable. This topology is called Linear Bus Topology when it has only two endpoints.

It transmits data in one direction only. All the devices are connected with one single cable in these types of topology.

Diagram of Topology (Bus)

Here is a diagram for this type of topology. It helps you to see how this topology works in the network.

Bus Topology

Advantages of topology(Bus):

The following are the advantages of this topology. You can also suggest more in the comment section

  • This type of topology is easy to understand.
  • This type of topology is cost-effective.
  • The cable in bus topology is least compared to others.
  • This type of topology is used in small networks only.
  • Joining two cables together, Bus topology is easy to expand.

Disadvantages of  topology(Bus):

The following are the advantages of this topology.

  • If the cable fails, the entire system goes down.
  • If traffic is increased, the performance of the network is decreased.
  • The cable in bus topology has a limited length.
  • This type of topology is slow as compare to ring topology.
  • If the cable fails, the whole network fails.
