Star topology vs Tree topology

Star topology:

In star topology, all the computers are connected with a single hub, through a cable. The hub is the central node. All the other nodes are connected to this hub node.

Each node has its own dedicated connection to the central hub. The central hub behaves as a repeater/ token for data flow. Star topology can be used with twisted-pair cable, coaxial cable, and optical fiber.

Star topology vs Tree topology

Advantages of star topology:

  • Star topology gives high performance with few nodes.
  • Star topology gives high performance with low network traffic.
  • In star topology, the hub can be upgraded easily.
  • Star topology is easy to troubleshoot.
  • Star topology is easy to set up and modify.
  • If a node fails, it does not affect the rest of the network.

Star topology vs Tree topology

Disadvantages of star topology:

  • The installation cost is very high.
  • It is very expensive to use.
  • All the nodes depend on the central hub.
  • If the hub fails, all the computers stop working.
  • The performance depends on the hub’s capacity.

Tree topology:

Tree topology forms a hierarchy. Tree topology has a root node and all other nodes are connected to it. This is the reason it is also called hierarchical topology. Tree topology must have at least three levels to the hierarchy. If work stations are located in groups, the tree topology is ideal. Tree topology uses WAN (Wide Area Network).

Star topology vs Tree topology

Advantages of tree topology:

  • There is an extension of bus and star topology.
  • The expansion of nodes is possible.
  • The expansion of nodes is easy.
  • Tree topology is easily managed.
  • Tree topology is easily maintained.
  • Errors can be detected easily in a tree topology.

Disadvantages of tree topology:

  • Tree topology is cabled heavily.
  • Tree topology is expensive.
  • It is difficult to maintain in case of more nodes.
  • If the central hub fails, the entire network fails.
