What is Gateway?

A simple definition of gateway

A network gateway is used to join two networks. In this way, one network can communicate with the devices of another network. The user cannot access the internet, cannot communicate with the network, cannot send the data to network, and cannot get the data from another network.

A gateway can be implemented completely in software as well as in hardware. A gateway can also be implemented with the combination of both hardware and software.

The edge of a network appears over a network gateway. So the related capabilities like firewalls and proxy servers tend to be integrated with it.

What is Gateway?

A gateway is a data communication device. It provides a remote network with connectivity to a host network. It provides communication to an autonomous system that is out of bounds of host network nodes. It acts like an entry point of a network as well as the exit point.

In order to use routing paths, all the data routed inward or outward first passes through and communicates with a gateway. In a computer network, a router is configured to work as a gateway device in the computer network.

Am7s defines Gateway

A gateway is a communication device. It is used to provide a remote network with connectivity to a host network. Every network has a limit. For the communication of a network node with another network’s node, the network will need the services of a gateway.

Gateway is familiar with the routing path or other remote networks. It is obvious that all the communication placed within the network is conducted using some devices like switches or routers.

The gateway is implemented at the boundary of a network. In this way, it manages all the data communication. The communication may be routed internally or externally from the network.

Gateway possesses information about the internal path of the host network and learned paths of different remote networks.

For communication of a node with the foreign network, it passes the data packet to the gateway which routes it to the destination. Gateway uses the best possible path.

Gateway: Protocol converters

Gateways are the network protocol converters. The two networks in which gateway joins are often of different base protocols. The gateway facilitates the compatibility between different protocols. Network gateways can operate at any level of the OSI (Open system interconnection) model.

Types of gateway

There are some types of gateway. These are divided on the basis of functionality.

  • Web application firewalls
  • Clouds storage gateways
  • 10T gateways
  • API, SOA, or XML gateways
  • Media gateways
  • Email security gateways
  • VoIP trunk gateways
  • Amazon API gateway

Advantages of gateway

The following are the advantages of gateway.

  • The main benefit of a gateway is security.
  • It allows no access if it fails.
  • The communication between networks stops f it fails.
  • The internal network structure is masked.
  • It supports different protocol-based networks.

Disadvantages of gateway

Here are disadvantages of gateway.

  • Inconvenience users by requiring authentication.
  • For some services, a proxy may not be available.
  • It may slow down the network with fast communication.
  • It is difficult to troubleshoot.
  • It is not easy to manage.
  • It is difficult to set up if it fails for the first time.
