What does MAN Network mean?
A metropolitan area network (MAN) is a network that interconnects users with computer resources in a geographic area or region larger than LAN.It is similar to a local area network (LAN) but it covers an entire city or campus.
Many LANs connect together to form MAN Network. Thus, MANs are larger than LANs but smaller than wide area networks (WAN). MAN Network are very efficient. It provide fast communication via high-speed fiber optic cables.A MAN is ideal for many kinds of network users because it is a medium-size network.
MANs are uses to build networks with high data connection speeds for cities and towns. The main purpose of MAN is to interconnect two LAN together. MAN also uses routers and switches to transfer data. MAN has a range of over 50kms. The speed of metropolitan area network is about 1000 Mbps.

Uses of metropolitan area network:
- MAN of various sizes can be found in the metropolitan areas of Australia,Lodz,England,Poland,Geneva and Switzerland.
- Large universities also sometimes use the MAN to describe their networks. A recent trend is the installation of wireless MANs.
- Digital cable television.
- In government agencies.
- University campuses.
- Cable broadband.
- To connect several branches of the local school.
- In hospital (for communication between doctors, research offices, labs).
- A network of fire stations.
- In airports.
- Networking between community colleges within the country.
- Use in public libraries.
Technologies uses to develop a MAN network:
FDDI (Fiber distribution data interface)
ATM (Asynchronous transfer mode)
SMDS (Switched multi-megabit data service)
FDDI is use for transferring data in LAN. Its range is within 200 km. As FDDI can handle thousands of users so this standard is also include in MAN.
Working of MAN Network:
The working mechanism of a MAN is similar to an ISP (Internet Service Provider). But it is not own by a single organization.Like a LAN,WAN, a MAN also provides share network connections to its users. It works on the data link layer, which is Layer 2 of the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model. Distributed Queue Dual Bus (DQDB) is the MAN standard specify by the (IEEE) Institute Of Electrical And Electronics Engineers. While using this standard,it can cover up to 20-25 miles or 30-40 km.
Advantages and Disadvantages of MAN
Advantages of a metropolitan area network (MAN)
There are many advantages of MAN network, some of them given below.
It is less expensive to attach MAN with WAN. MAN gives you good efficiency of data. All data on MAN is easily manageable in a centralize way.
Sending local emails:
You can send local emails fast and free on MAN.
High speed than WAN:
Speed of data can easily reach upon 1000 Mbps,as MAN use fiber optics.Files and databases transfer rate is fast.
Sharing of the internet:
With installation of MANs, users can share their internet connection. In this way multiple users can get the same high-speed internet.
Conversion of LAN to MAN is easy:
MAN is combination of two or more LAN network. So it is a faster way to connect two LAN network together. It is possible by fast configuration of links.
MAN’s has a high-security level than WAN.
Disadvantages of metropolitan area network (MAN)
Difficult to manage:
It is very difficult to manage if size and number of LANs network increase. This is due to a security and extra configuration problems.
Internet speed difference:
As it cannot work on phone copper wires. Copper wires effect the speed of MAN.So high cost is needed for fiber optics.
In this network there are high risk of attacking hackers as compare to LAN. So data may be leak.Highly security staff is need in MAN.
Technical staff require to set up:
Highly technical people require to setup MAN. The technical people are network administrators and troubleshooters.
Need More wires:
In MAN more than LAN network, cables require. As you know ,it is combination of two LANs.
